1. Read the articles on assistive devices, and universally design which can benefit persons with disabilities and help them to integrate into mainstream society, both in school and at work.  Provide an account of the key takeaways that you felt were most important, mentioning in particular barriers and possible solutions for a more enabled community or workplace.

2. What unique assistive device can you come up with? From example, my father made a device to aid his sister who had lost her vision in putting on her socks and stockings. I have noticed that the bus shelter near me is not deep enough to allow a person using a wheelchair to be protected from the elements.  Note: You might want to confer with a persons with a disability to find out what would make their lives easier.)

Public Budgeting

This week, the topic you will be studying is public budgeting. Public administration scholars describe the federal budget is one of the most important policy instruments of our government. Through their budget decisions, our elected leaders fulfill their constitutional responsibilities, signal their policy priorities, and manage the federal purse. The budget reflects their decisions to tax and spend, to borrow and lend, and to consume and invest. Those decisions define the size of the federal government and its role in the national economy. Policymakers use the federal budget process to establish spending priorities and identify revenue to pay for those activities. The size and scope of those decisions make the budget process one of the most important and complex exercises in public policy making. (Peter Peterson Foundation)

Rel Discussion: Karbala

For this discussion, let’s think about Karbala. What are the definitive aspects of this event that make it especially significant?

For a Shi’i representation of Karbala, please consider the videos below. These are examples of the noha genre of lamentations over Husayn and his family. The videos feature images of the shrines of Husayn and his brother ‘Abbas (son of ‘Ali and Umm al-Banin, whom ‘Ali married after Fatima’s death) in Karbala, which are major sites of Shi’i pilgrimage. The third video is “The Prayer of Fatima.” How does the song construct a relationship between Fatima and Shi’i communities? How do the artists envision their connection to Fatima? Please refer to at least one specific verse in each song.

Don’t worry so much about “wrong answers” here, because we’re really doing some poetry/film interpretation this week, but it might be helpful to do the readings first for some benefit of context.

Socw 6301 Research Hypothesis and its Purpose

The research hypothesis typically states the anticipated relationship between variables in a quantitative study. Oftentimes, these variables are labeled as dependent and independent, with the independent variable meaning the intervention, treatment, or other change that is introduced. The researcher then wishes to measure the impact of that change on the dependent variable.

Why might it be important for a researcher to predict the findings and show the variables’ expected relationship in this manner? What purpose does the hypothesis serve? In this Discussion, you answer these questions and generate a hypothesis for your own proposed study.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Learning Resources on the research hypothesis and its purpose.
  • Consider the problem you have identified, the research question, and your initial reading of the peer-reviewed research articles. Based on these, generate a research hypothesis.
  • Note: If your research question is qualitative, for the purposes of this Discussion, consider how you would change the question to use a quantitative approach. Then develop a hypothesis that would be generated from that question.

By Day 3

Post your description of the hypothesis’s function in the research process. Then, share the hypothesis you have generated for your research question. Identify the independent and dependent variables in your hypothesis.
