Evaluation of a Weight Loss Program

Many Americans believe that they are overweight, by a few pounds to a few hundred pounds. Because of this, weight loss systems are big business. For this assignment, you are to select a weight loss system and evaluate it in terms of the information about the physiology of ingestive behavior covered this module.

  • Find a website, a brochure, a popular article, or an advertisement about weight control that proposes a mechanism for loss of excess weight.
  • Document the key proposals in terms of the main claims for success of the program (e.g., restriction of fat and small portions).
  • Describe the reasons provided for the effectiveness of the program (e.g., a full stomach reduces hunger).
  • Discuss the physiological components involved in the weight loss program. Clearly express an understanding of the physiology of the process of hunger, satiation, eating, and drinking as relevant for the weight loss method being described (e.g., long periods between meals would be likely to reduce blood sugar levels).
  • Present a critique of the materials based on the module information on eating and weight regulation.
  • Evaluate the proposal and suggest whether you would try this weight loss system or recommend it to someone else. Explain why or why not.

For this assignment, you are required to cite, at a minimum, the online course and the textbook for the course. Additional sources are welcome. Scholarly sources are preferred and can be found in the Argosy University library located under theAcademic Resources section of Course Home. For reputable web sources, look for .gov or .edu sites as opposed to .com sites. Do not use Wikipedia.

Your paper should be double-spaced, in 12 point Times New Roman font, and with normal 1-inch margins; written in APA style; and free of typographical and grammatical errors. It should include a title page and a reference page. The body of the paper should be between 3 and 4 pages.

Submit An Annotated Bibliography That Categorizes All Resources

Overview

Annotated bibliographies provide you with the opportunity to cite, summarize, and compare and contrast resources you will use in a paper. You will cite each resource in APA style, write an approximately 150-word description that summarizes the central theme and scope of the resource, and compare and contrast it with other resources. For more information on annotated bibliographies, consult the SNHU Writing Center’s annotated bibliography guide.

Depending on the assignment, the annotated bibliography may serve a number of purposes, including but not limited to reviewing the literature on a particular subject; illustrating the quality of research you have done; providing examples of the types of resources available; describing other items on a topic that may be of interest to the reader; and/or exploring the subject for further research. The articles should provide sufficient information for you to compare and contrast the two theories. (Source: http://lib.skidmore.edu/library/index.php/writing-an-annotated-bibliography)

Choose those works that provide a variety of perspectives on your topic. You will need to include at least seven scholarly resources total, including peer-reviewed journal articles or well-respected texts.

As noted below, students should pay attention to the following points in their annotation:

 Summarize the central theme and scope of the resource

 Include a paragraph that covers the following:

o

Evaluates the authority or background of the author

o

Comments on the intended audience

o

Compares or contrasts this work with another you have cited OR

explains how this work illuminates your bibliography topic

 Cite the resource using APA style (see below for example)

The annotated bibliography is due in

Module Seven

. You should include at least seven quality resources directly related to your topic.

Memory Cognition Week 8

Choose one of the two topics below to use for this discussion.  Please make sure your initial post is 2-3 paragraphs in length.  Feel free to use supporting documentation (other resources) as well.

Option 1

You learned about some different theories of cognitive development in childhood in your readings this week.  How would you apply concepts from these theories to improve education?  Address this question for several different age groups (e.g., elementary school, middle school, and high school).

Option 2

You are tasked to do an in-service for middle-aged people who want to learn about the concept of “successful aging.”  How would you describe this idea?  What components would you emphasize?  What would you recommend they do in order to achieve this goal?  Is this a realistic goal for most people?

A Description Of How Art Is Experienced Through The Senses.

When you have an emotional response to a work of art (whether it is a theater production, a painting, sculpture, a photograph, a musical composition, or a work of literature), your emotional response is directly tied to the senses, which in turn, informs your perspective on the work of art. And, of course, not all emotional responses are going to be pleasant. Just because it is art, does not mean you are going to enjoy it! You may hear a musical composition that sounds discordant, strident, and wholly cacophonous to you. It is not an enjoyable experience and your response is a negative one. You may have the same negative response, or a positive one, to any work of art.

Your visceral response is informed by the senses. A pleasant smell invokes fond memories of past experiences when you once wandered through museums with your grandmother. An opening of a theater production that involves unsavory appetizers and hors d’oeuvres may remind you of a really awful food poisoning episode you experienced while attending a dinner theater production. Hence, somehow the play you saw has never been a pleasant memory and the only way you respond to it is by being repelled. Your perspectives of art are determined by your experiences with emotional responses to art. In the same way, your creation of a work of art is informed by an emotional response, triggered by one or more sensual experiences.

As you read Alice Walker’s “Everyday Use,” be aware of how the quilt in the story is discussed as both an artistic creation with aesthetic properties that enhance a sensory response, as well as a creation that has a significant practical use.

In this Discussion, you explore how art is experienced through the senses and the artist’s connection with his or her creation, aesthetically, and pragmatically

Cross Cultural Homework

General Instructions:

Cultural Applications assignment, runs weeks 4 and 5-NO separate week 4 conference. Samples available under content>week 4. Rubrics from the syllabus are also reiterated under content>syllabus. Note that the samples are not perfect, and are meant to give a general idea of what a completed assignment might look like.

OPTION 1-CHANGE THE WORLD

You receive a letter in the mail. The letter is from the American Psychological Association(APA), and it grants you unlimited funds to visit any country in the world you want, and set up a project there. It could be educational, health related(including awareness, etc).

Examples of previous projects by students have included such varied projects as a teen prevention program in two states, a midday meal program for schoolchildren in Africa, a counseling center for victims of a natural disaster in Asia, and more. Next, write up your project and post directly into this conference.

So please choose a country and a project. You may refer to the sample as an illustration of what is expected. The sample is not perfect, but meant to give an idea of what the project can look like.

Put the title in the main conference(Universal mental health support by 2020 in Country A, Model schools in the desert, No more homelessness for children in Country B, etc)

Instructions

Structure the project with the following sections:

  1. Title: This should be short and to the point: identify the target population, the focus of the project, and the country/region.
  2. Background of the project: This should be one paragraph.
  3. Purpose of the project: This is the point of the study—why you are doing it (one paragraph).
  4. Method: Here, you will describe the participants, the instruments/measurement methods/resources used, and the process: in other words, the target population, methods, and procedure (one paragraph each for participants, instruments/resources, and process).
  5. Outcome and rationale: What do you hope to achieve in this project, and how, specifically, will the project make a difference in the living conditions of your target population? Take into account the socio-cultural context (one to two paragraphs).

Please note that this has to do with improving the lot of people with the focus on the psychology of human beings(so for eg. saving animals, though a good cause, does not necessarily mean what we are looking for here, and we are not in political science class, we are psychological scientists choosing to improve the state of the world’s well-being) from any part of the globe. Also, the country you choose needs to be described in respectful terms-so although there are problems that need to be solved, this is not a reason to blame people, or berate cultures different or unfamiliar to our usual socio-cultural conditions. Some ideas of what psychologists are doing in different parts of the world are also provided(via a clickable link on humanitarian heroes from the APA) under Content>Dr H supplement>change the world(which also has the sample assignment).

At last, add at least two references in APA style.

———————————————–

OPTION 2-UNITY AND DIVERSITY

In this exercise, we will explore our lives as members of ourselves in a cultural context. This is a change from the standard universal vs. specific(compartmentalized) and ‘evolutionary vs. situation specific’ outlooks of previous decades in the field. The newer trend is to try to look at individuals as shaped by the immediate cultural surroundings(localized) and ALSO as influenced by the larger circle of culture(global and unified). In this outlook, the two trends can be seen to co-exist, instead of being pitted against each other, allowing for a more rounded view of cultural influence.

ASSIGNMENT:

This assignment has two parts, each related to the global and local theoretical aspects of culture, also known here as the

diversity and unity aspects. Part 1 below(local) is to be answered in this conference section. A second part is open for the global/universal aspects below as well. Please try to put both into one conference post, and give it a catchy title for fun, with a hint of the diversity and unity angles(Irish brew and Firecrackers, Hawaiian Hula and High school graduation, etc).

Part 1: Local theories: Diversity: post below:

1 a. Share with the class(compulsory): Family/particular heritage and customs that you share with a small group/other person (particular festivals, anniversaries, special event, etc): This points out the uniqueness of your socio-cultural identity and we will call it the sharing of diversity, the local effects of culture.

1. b(optional/not graded, but you can share if you feel inclined). Share with the class something about your family history, or even ancestry, if you wanted to follow the links and do some genealogy research of your own(up to you, I am just giving you the option). Share something about about the cultures that you descended from, that  your parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles told you about.

Part 2: Global aspects of cultural influence:

In this section, we look at ourselves in the global aspect, what are the more universal aspects of culture that have influenced us. Here, for example, you can share customs/celebrations that are also shared with the majority of persons from your culture(July 4 for e.g. in the USA; high school graduation, etc). This refers to the other part of your identity in terms of the underyling commonalities of major cultures: the global aspect of culture.

My Life Philosophy: Positive Living & Resiliency Paper

well-articulated life philosophy that reflects your positive and negative life events and describes how they have affected you,

Include at least 10 photos of you at different developmental levels and label each photo with a caption (be sure to identify yourself), the date, and event.  Photos of you at important events in your life or with people you care about may be a good way to select photos for inclusion. These may be photos that depict your significant positive or negative life events, or they may be photos of you at other meaningful moments in your life.  If you can find pictures on the Internet or from magazines or other media that represent what your 3 life dreams look like to you, then include them, too.  If you have these, you will have a total of 13 photos.  You may include more than 13.  Ten photos (minus the dreams pictures) are the minimum required number.

Workplace stress can have long-term effects. Our text identifies the following four areas which can increase this type of stress:

Workplace stress can have long-term effects. Our text identifies the following four areas which can increase this type of stress:

  • Role conflict: two or more incompatible demands at work or across work and non-work roles
  • Role ambiguity: vagueness or unclearness in role responsibilities and functions
  • Workload incompatibility: occurs when the amount of work to be accomplished exceeds the employee’s capabilities
  • Job insecurity: the feeling that the security of one’s job is unstable

In addition, happiness and positivity can lead to personal success and further indicates the following ideas to increase one’s happiness:

  • Setting challenging and meaningful goals
  • Disputing negative thinking and deliberately practicing positive self-talk
  • Choosing to forgive others and let go of grudges and hard feelings
  • Counting one’s blessings and intentionally expressing gratitude for them
  • Visualizing future success
  • Practicing healthy habits such as a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and regular exercise

Thus, hypothetically these suggestions and ideas can be applied to each of our lives. Whether you are working and going to school, or just going to school, they are applicable since school, too, is an organization.

After reading and viewing all of the required resources this week, consider all of the factors related to a person’s health and the workplace, how can you apply the concepts to your own life right now?

  • Identify at least three strategies that you can implement today to increase your level of success in the situation you most identify with.
  • Why do you think these strategies can work for you?
  • What strategies could you utilize to increase someone else’s happiness level and assist them in increased success based on our content?
  • Overall, consider the past five weeks of content. What do you think are two of the most important factors that will be applicable to you and your current goals? What about to your future goals? Why or How?

Your journal should be a minimum of four to five double-spaced pages, adequately discuss all questions posed, and demonstrate maturating self-awareness. This is a reflection based on all of your required resources for the week and you will not be required to use additional sources. Use the rubric to check for thoroughness of your writing. If using additional sources, the Ashford Library should be used as your primary resource for this journal, but other credible sources will also be accepted. Cite all information from your sources according to APA guidelines as outlined in the In-Text Citation Helper: A Guide to Making APA In-Text Citations. List each of your sources at the end of your post according to APA style as shown in the sample page for References.

Researching Exaggerated Claims On Infant/Toddler Development

TASK

1. Select one claim from a company regarding a specific product, diet, or service aimed at infants/toddlers (ages 0-2 years 11 mo.) that you suspect to be exaggerated, unfounded, unrealistic or false.

2. Access the University Library so that you can find 4 research articles from peer-reviewed research journals in the psychology discipline related to infant/toddler development that either support or refute the company’s claim.

3. Write a 1,400- to 1,650-word paper with accurate APA formatting that addresses and includes all of the following:

  • TITLE PAGE

  • INTRODUCTION
  • PRESENT THE CLAIM & ITS CONNECTIONS TO DEVELOPMENT
    • What is the claim you selected from a company regarding a specific product, diet, or service that you suspect to be exaggerated, unfounded, unrealistic or false?
    • What area or areas of development does the product, diet, or service claim to enhance?
      • The claim you select must be directed toward infants’ or todddlers’ development.
  • RESEARCH FINDINGS
    • What do published articles and scholarly sources say about the claim you are investigating?
    • Is there any evidence to support the claim? Why or why not? Explain
    • What does the research you found reveal about how to promote healthy development for infant/toddlers in relation to the claim you investigated?
    • What does the research you found reveal about the necessity and actual benefits of the company’s claim regarding the product, diet, or service?
  • PROFESSIONAL ENDORSEMENT
    • Imagine that a licensed psychologist in your state publically endorsed a product with no empirical evidence supporting its claims. It was later discovered that the psychologist was receiving a percentage of money from the sale of the product to parents.
    1. Is this a violation of the APA code of ethics?  Explain.
    2. Be sure to cite the appropriate section or sections of the Code in your response.
  •  CONCLUSION
  • REFERENCES
    • Your must have a minimum of 4 peer-reviewed journal articles from psychology research journals. (See step 2.)

4. Use accurate APA formatting. Use subheadings!

Note: You may not find a peer-reviewed journal article on a company’s claim regarding a specific product, diet, or service. However, you will most likely be able to find peer-reviewed journal articles on the general issue that you are investigating. For example, if you are investigating a specific educational video that claim that cognitive skills in infancy are enhanced by using a particular approach or method, you can then review and evaluate studies that focus on enhancing cognitive skills in infancy. Review the evidence for and against the use of specific techniques and summarize your findings.

HINTS

Here are some general ideas to help you select a specific claim from a company regarding a specific product, diet, or service that you suspect to be exaggerated or unrealistic.

  1. A specific brand of educational videos targeting infant language development
  2. A specific company’s product related to classical music and cognitive development
  3. Benefits of a specific health product, a specific diet, or specific brand of organic food diet and the effects the company claims it has on physical and cognitive development
  4. Products promising to teach your 18-month-old how to read
  5. Any other claim made by a manufacturer or service provider, aimed at enhancing infant or toddler development
