Leadership and Management—A Personal Perspective

Leadership and Management—A Personal Perspective

Last week, you began exploring the similarities and differences of leadership and management roles and the contributions these roles make to an organization’s functioning. Social workers need to be aware of these similarities and differences in order to determine which management or leadership skills are most appropriate in a given position or situation.

This week, you have focused on the influence of external factors on an organization’s functioning with a special focus on their impact on the leadership of social workers in supervisory roles.

As you have explored leadership and management roles, skills, and behaviors, you may have become aware of how these align, or do not align, with your personal skills, strengths, and interests. You may also have begun to consider how external factors might influence you if you were to assume a leadership or management role in social work.

For this Assignment, you assess your strengths and areas for growth in order to determine what aspects of leadership and management are a good “fit” with your personality, leadership style, and relevant skills. You also address how external factors might influence you as you serve in a leadership or management role.

Assignment (4–5 paragraphs): Complete the following:

  • Assess your strengths and areas for growth with regard to both the leadership and management roles based on what you understand about these roles so far. Be sure to address whether your skills and interests align better with the leadership or management role.
  • Identify at least one area of growth in either of these roles you would like to further develop, and explain why.
  • Identify two significant external factors that might influence your work if you served in a leadership or management role in social work. Explain why these external factors are significant and how they might affect your work as a leader or manager

Race and Ethnicity

How do you even begin to talk about race and ethnicity? And, specifically in a social work context, how do you broach these topics with clients, families, and communities? In 1994, eight American men of various backgrounds (African, Asian, European, and Latino descent) sat down together in a room to talk about race. What followed was a raw, emotional, and difficult conversation that peeled back the layers of racism’s impact. Although the Color of Fear film is decades old now, the need to talk about race remains.

For this Discussion, you view one such conversation among faculty and then analyze what you observed, considering the various perspectives and how they may inform social work practice.

To Prepare

  • View the Voices of Diversity: Race and Ethnicity video showing Social Work faculty sharing perspectives and experiences related to race and ethnicity.
  • Reflect on the video, identifying ideas, experiences, or statements that resonate with you, as well as strategies that were described.

By Day 3

Analyze what you learned from the Voices of Diversity video regarding perspectives and experiences related to race and ethnicity. Specifically:

  • What idea, experience, or statement resonated with you the most, and why?
  • What is one strategy described in the video that you will apply toward your self-awareness and/or cultural competence? How might this strategy help when working with a client who is racially or ethnically different from you?

Anti-Racist Social Work Practice

Discussion 2: Anti-Racist Social Work Practice

In the wake of the murder of George Floyd, the Black Lives Matter movement, and the rise of anti-Asian sentiment, many organizations and institutions have posted anti-racist statements on their websites. The statements typically condemn racism and describe the ways in which the organization is combatting racism and working toward allyship with communities of color. Walden University, the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), and regional NASW chapters have all issued statements.

But what might anti-racism look like for a single social worker? How would you convey your commitment to social justice and your professional beliefs and values? For this week’s second Discussion, you draft your own personal statement of anti-racist social work practice.

To Prepare
  • Review the Learning Resources on racism and on the principles of anti-racist practice and social justice.
  • Read and reflect on the sample anti-racist statements from educational institutions and organizations in the Learning Resources.
  • Consider how you would frame and articulate your own anti-racist statement and the words you would use.
  • You can use Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or another software to present visuals in addition to your written statement if you would like.
By Day 4

Post a 150- to 200-word personal statement that reflects your anti-racist social work practice.

Also record and post a 1- to 2-minute video to explain the choices made in your statement. Specifically:

  • Why did you choose the wording you did?
  • In what ways does the statement express your beliefs and commitment to anti-racist practice?
  • How does your statement address the principles of anti-racist practice, as described in the textbook?

Reflection

I 100% agree there is still discrimination against blacks to this day. The only way discrimination could truly be eliminated is through moral action. There is a difference between not doing something because I am told versus being willing to choose not to because I know it is wrong.

Access and treatment inequities still occur in the workplace towards Hispanics of their education, language fluency, and appearance (Bell, pg. 162). Many times Hispanics get turned down because of stereotypical thinking that has been passed down for generations. Things like Hispanics only want to receive government assistance and not work or that they are all criminals is what some people to this day believe. More often than not, Hispanics are willing to work anywhere in any position regardless of the pay to provide for their household.

Chapter 6 explained that Asians are one of the fastest-growing minority groups in the United States because of their birth and immigration rates (Bell, pg. 195). Which is like my Latino community. In many ways, Asians and Hispanics are alike for instance, the importance of family and traditions. There is a tendency of creating a big family to continue the family bloodline and for one day their children to grow up and take care of the elderly in the family because it is their responsibility and duty.

As time passed, the term “white” would refer to people that originate from Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa (Bell, pg. 239). I believe the growth of non-Hispanic Whites is declining due to two things, more diverse categories that one might identify as and lack of knowledge. Before that, there was not many “categories” one could check off that they identified as however, now there are. This might have an economic impact because there is still racial bias in the world, whether we choose to see it or turn a blind eye.

Lastly, as I watched this week’s TED talk the speaker pointed out the need for racial diversity to be applied in every single corporate and higher-up position to promote diversity and shut down ignorant beliefs that have been passed down. She explained that society needs to start being comfortable with having uncomfortable conversations about race. I think everyone has become too sensitive. Everyone is scared to speak up but when they do, it is for the wrong things.
