Prepare for your discussion by studying the Module 4 readings and viewings. Then respond to the following:

All female band, The Spice Girls, in concert.Introduction

Postmodernism is a response to modernism, the idea that our reasoning abilities provide us access to the Truth about reality. For modernists, it is through our reasoning abilities that we can best develop our moral and social characters. In contrast, postmodernists challenge the notion that there is any kind of universal truth. Indeed, what we perceive as truth is socially constructed. Accordingly, meaningful ethical action is often the result of challenging and subverting these dominant storylines or paradigms we create about our world. This activity aligns with module outcomes 1 and 3.

Discussion Question

Prepare for your discussion by studying the Module 4 readings and viewings. Then respond to the following:

  • To what extent do you believe our opportunity for creating meaningful, ethical action in the world lies more with the modernist perspective, such as Descartes and Kant (i.e. divine command theory, deontology, etc.), or the postmodern philosophies of Michel Foucault, Mike Ventimiglia and bell hooks? Please offer a specific example of how your chosen approach can serve to create a more ethically ideal world.
  • Please describe the ways in which some of today’s music reflects each of the three philosophies: ethical egoism, nihilism, and postmodernism. Please share links to music videos to illustrate your point. Be sure to reference specific lyrics in your posts.

Evaluation Criteria

Your initial post is due by Thursday at 11:59 PM EST. Your responses to other posts are due by Sunday at 11:59 PM EST.

Initial Discussion Post

Your initial post should be at least 250 words and must substantively integrate the assigned readings from the module with proper APA style formatting. You may use additional sources and materials as long as they are relevant to the discussion and cited properly

In this assignment, you will read an article about the Mozart effect and identify various parts of the research process.

Assignment 3: The Mozart Effect

In this assignment, you will read an article about the Mozart effect and identify various parts of the research process. This exercise will help you learn how to read a research article and to understand the research process.

Read the following article:

•Rauscher, F. H., Shaw, G. L., & Ky, K. N. (1993). Music and spatial task performance. Nature, 365. 6447: 611. (October 14, 1993). (ProQuest Document ID 76004658).

In your article summary, respond to the following questions:

•State the research hypothesis in your own words. Identify the independent and dependent variables.

•What were some variables the researchers controlled in their study? Why was this necessary?

•What evidence do the researchers offer as a test of their hypothesis? Is this evidence empirical (observable)? Is it valid?

•What explanation do the researchers offer for their findings? Does the evidence justify this explanation?

Read the following article:

Jenkins, J.S. (2001). The Mozart effect. Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, 94, 170-172.

Based on your readings, respond to the following:

•Do you think there is any merit in the study (Rauscher, Shaw, & Ky, 1993)? Give three reasons for your position.

•Does the study take individual differences in spatial ability into account? Explain your answer.

•What are two ways in which the experiment could be modified to make the results more generalizable?

Write a 5–6-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M1_A3.doc.

By Wednesday, April 15, 2015, deliver your assignment to the M1: Assignment 3 Dropbox.

The Mozart Effect

The Mozart Effect is a phenomenon that occurs when individuals listen to the two piano sonata.  The stated results are individuals that are able to remember information easier.  There are two studies that were conducted in associated with the Mozart Effect.  The first study was dedicated to spatial skill performance and its neural pathway relation to music.  The other study was dedicated to challenging the first study due to the argument that any type of music that is appreciated can cause the same memory effect.  The second study was based on an experiment with unborn mice that heard Mozart’s piano sonata K448.  The other part of the study was related to the effects of Mozart’s piano sonata K448 on patients who were suffering from epilepsy.  The overall conclusion is that Mozart’s piano sonata K448 has positive effects on both animals and humans.

Keywords: Mozart Effect, spatial skill performance, memory, music, neurons, neural pathways, brain, rats, and epilepsy

The Mozart Effect

Research and conducting experiments is the most effective way possible to gain an answer.  The type of research is based on the situation, the hypothesis, and the resources the individual or group has on hand.  The purpose of this research paper is to examine the Mozart Effect from two different journals and answer questions based on the research materials.  The first article for examination is Music and spatial task performance.

Music and Spatial Task Performance

The Mozart Effect is essentially a study to determine if music helps individuals to accomplish tasks better.  Memory is definitely a factor in this study.  Rauscher, Shaw, Levine, and Ky (1993), hypothesized that a model of the brain and its pathways for neurons would prove that music and the ability to orient oneself with their environment can be seen using the same neural paths and they cover a large portion of the same areas in the brain.

A much simpler picture would be two cars driving down the same highway to get to similar locations.  The actual terminology used is spatial task performance.  A quick explanation of spatial ability is necessary to understand the important of the study.  Spatial skill deals with comprehension and memory related to spaces among objects (JHU).  This ability can be classified as an intelligence that is set apart from others such as verbal or reasoning.  It can be considered a fluid type of trait that evolves over time as people have different life experiences (JHU).

The significance of spatial ability is two-fold: in application and also in occupation.  In terms of application it is related to a person’s ability to perform at least two tasks at the same time.  For example: people who can eat and drive at the same time have developed this ability through spatial skill.  Just like experience work has its spatial skill requirements.  Occupations such as mathematics, natural sciences, and meteorology are included in the spatial skill classification (JUH).

Notice that these types of occupations often require research.  Two important components of research are the independent variable and the dependent variable.  In this study the independent variables are: Mozart’s sonata, college students, and three year olds (Rauscher, Shaw, & Ky, 1993).  The dependent variable in the study was memory (Rauscher, Shaw, & Ky, 1993).  The researchers focused on Mozart’s sonata which was a controlled variable because it was the only type of music they used.  This was necessary because the study itself was music specific i.e. Mozart’s sonata.  There were two other controlled variables college students and three year olds.

Controlling age ranges was important to see how memory was affected in children and adults, namely to see who remembered the most information for the longest period of time.  Rauscher, Shaw, & Ky (1993), presented data from two different studies: college students with improved short-term memory due to Mozart’s sonata, and three year olds with long-term advancements specifically in nonverbal cognitive abilities based on listening to Mozart’s sonata.

The evidence from this study was observable and valid.  The researchers Rauscher, Shaw, & Ky (1993) explained that infants possess the highest level of ability concerning memorization and the development of nonverbal cognitive skills.  As a person ages brain elasticity lessens and it becomes harder for a person to grasp new material specifically memory recall and implementation.  The evidence presented did justify the explanation and proved that music does travel along the same neural pathways as spatial ability.  The following is another study based on the Mozart Effect.

Comprehensive Career Program

For this discussion, provide an outline for a comprehensive career program which includes program planning, organizational needs, implementation, administrative needs, and criteria for evaluation.

For example, if you are currently, or will be, a professional school counselor, describe how you would set up your comprehensive program. If you are a mental health counselor, imagine that you have several clients in need of this service so you are setting up a program to meet their needs. For any context, be sure to include the materials needed.

This assignmnet is a discussion question assignment, that you are required to write a discussion post for  the above topic and requiresyou to write a response to the two peer;s postings that I have provided below. Please follow all requirements in the instructions

Comprehensive Career Program

As an in-home health counselor there are a plethora of client needs that must be addressed including rehabilitation into the workplace and career planning. Because the clientele can be any age or multiple members within a family unit the program plan must be versatile as well as developmental in order to meet the needs of different age range and diverse clients.  The program overall will involve needs, interest and personality based assessments, skills overview, and, education and assistance for career-decision making.

Program Planning

The counselors will need to plan the program by developing a curriculum with the goal of achieving identity in the areas of self, social and functionality. (McKinnon & Jones, 1975) Achieving this goal involves administering various assessments, utilizing career education techniques, knowledge and advocacy of different, appropriate, career paths. Due to the wide age range of clients it is essential that the counselor have knowledge of the lifespan and the coinciding developmental stages in order to utilize age appropriate career counseling strategy. (Zunker, 2016) Program will feature:

-Personality Assessment (MBTI)

-Needs Assessment

-Interest Assessment (O*NET)

-Vocational/employment History

-Educational history

-Goal Setting

– Career/Education Options Exploration

-Action Plan

-Personal Counseling to facilitate development of Identity

– Vocational/ Educational Placement

Organizational Needs

Since the program is home-based, in addition to needing competent counselors, they must have a valid drivers license, and, a safe and reliable vehicle in order to travel to client homes as well as occasionally transport clients for therapeutic reasons. Additionally, the counselors will need to obtain consent in order to consult with educators of student clients.

McKinnon & Jones (1975) suggest beginning with a needs-based assessment to assess client vocational needs such as interest designation or educational deficits. It is also suggested that the counselor have a collaborative effort with the educators of any youth clients. The program will be implemented with the goal of career education. McKinnon & Jones (1975) define career education broadly as assisting an individual in the total process of becoming. Furthermore McKinnon & Jones (1975) outline career education with 5 themes; solving problems, understanding self and others, understanding the world, obtaining skills and experience, and, achieving identity (self, social and functional).

Once the client needs are assessed the counselors will also administer personality (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) and interest based assessments (O*NET) in order to gather a holistic client picture. If the client’s are students then this will be the time for counselors to consult with the coinciding educators in order to gather information about client strengths and deficits. (McKinnon & Jones, 1975) For adult clients, this will be the time to gather vocational history and, past work experience, in order evaluate strengths and deficits. Once the information is collected, the counselor will explore career options and develop goals with the client in effort to promote career education and develop a comprehensive identity (self, social and functional).

Administrative Needs

The program needs at least 8-10 home health counselors that are familiar and eligible to administer and score assessments. These assessments also needs to have the ability to be performed and scored in a home setting as many of the in home therapy clients are homebound. The counselors also need to have a knowledge base and advocate for home-based careers and/or education such as online options as some clients may be permanently homebound.

Criteria For Evaluation

The main criteria for evaluation will be in both client survey and job placement statistics. Client’s whom are able to successfully enroll in an educational setting, a vocational training setting or a work setting/career will be tallied and measured against the client pool in order to gauge success.

POPULATION: All students (secondary school-aged youth in grades 9-12)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The mental health counselor is assigned to a number of the district’s high schools. The counselor is working on self- and peer-empowerment groups for youth that occur throughout the school year as an open door forum with an agenda to accommodate individuals as they come along. Part of the curriculum focuses on the basics of career development including educational planning and job development skills.

During this section of the curriculum, the counselor both demonstrates and assists the clients with what is appropriate interview attire; applications and resumes; budget planning; and

Some of the other goals for the curriculum include bringing in successful graduates from the local high schools who are interested in speaking to the youth about their life choices and decisions while being products of the school and/or neighborhood. These conversations will include the sway each person had about positive decision-making skills, substance-related concerns; connecting sexual awareness to their life trajectories, and even creating mentors within the school that also reach out to the students’ families in the community. This will assist individuals in becoming accountable for each other while promoting overall self-awareness for the students.

NEEDS: Faculty participation to become mentors (8-10); a space/room to accommodate the meetings (typically given by the school); community mentors; possible donations from a clothing store; and community partners willing to employee youth from the school after a vetting process.

EVALUATION: Design a tool that will follow youth through their high school process and even afterwards. While in their 9-10 grade years, every three months evaluation; 11-12 grade years, 6 month evaluations; and post-secondary, annual basis. Special interest will be paid towards students in special populations including students who are considered minorities in the educational setting (e.g., if a school is predominately Hispanic, how do White children fair; non-heterosexual identifying students; ESL students; etc.)

Assignment: Application Of Role Theory To A Case Study

Assignment: Application of Role Theory to a Case Study

This week, you will use role theory to apply to your chosen case study. In other words, your theoretical orientation—or lens—is role theory as you analyze the case study.

Use the same case study that you chose in Week 2. (Remember, you will be using this same case study throughout the entire course). Use the “Dissecting a Theory and Its Application to a Case Study” worksheet to help you dissect the theory. You do not need to submit this handout. It is a tool for you to use to dissect the theory, and then you can employ the information in the table to complete your assignment.

To prepare:

  • Review and focus on the same case study that you used in Week 2.
  • Review the websites and guides for developing PowerPoint skills found in the Learning Resources.
  • Use Personal Capture to record the PPT slides on your screen and your audio as you present the information. You will then use Kaltura Media to upload this recording to the assignment link.

Submit a narrated PowerPoint presentation using Kaltura Media that includes 11 to 12 slides.

  • Each slide should be written using bullet points, meaning no long paragraphs of written text should be in the slides.
  • The recorded audio takes the place of any written paragraphs, while the bullet points provide context and cues for the audience to follow along).

Your presentation should address the following:

  • Identify the presenting problem for the case study you selected. (Remember the presenting problem has to be framed from the perspective of role theory. For example, the presenting problem can be framed within the context of role functioning).
  • Identify all the relevant roles assumed by the client.
  • Analyze the social expectations and social and cultural norms revolving around the role, social position, and role scripts of one of the roles assumed by the client.
  • Explain the role and social position of the social worker in working with the client in the case study.
  • Describe how the role(s) and social position(s) assumed by the social worker will influence the relationship between the social worker and the client.
  • Identify three assessment questions that are guided by role theory that you will ask the client to better understand the problem.
  • Identify and describe two interventions that are aligned with the presenting problem and role theory.
  • Identify one outcome that you would measure if you were to evaluate one of the interventions you would implement to determine if the intervention is effective.
  • Evaluate one advantage and one limitation in using role theory in understanding the case.

Be sure to:

  • Identify and correctly reference the case study you have chosen.
  • Use literature to support your claims.
  • Use APA formatting and style.
  • Include the reference list on the last slide. CASE STUDY JAKE LEVY
