Ethics Paper

Required Resources
Read/review the following resources for this activity:

Introduction
In this session, you have been considering moral-ethical dilemmas you yourself faced or that you know of that you either resolved or failed to resolve, but hopefully learned from. You may never have given much thought to ethical theory nor what ethical premises/paradigms you have unconsciously held.

You will be focusing on this case for this assignment:

Jane Doe is a nursing student at University X. Jane is in week eight of a course entitled: “Introduction to Ethics”.

For the week one discussion, Jane copied work done by her friend John Doe in the same class two months ago (with a different professor). John told Jane it was okay to use his work as John’s professor never checked any work in the class using Turnitin.com. John claimed to have earned an A on the work also.

In week two, Jane went to StudentPapering.com and paid ten dollars for a week two essay done by a student (not John Doe) who took the same course four months ago. StudentPapering promises that all its archived work is of excellent quality and cannot be detected as copied. Jane then uploaded an exact copy of the work for the week two assignment.

In week three, Jane paid a worker at PaperingStudent.com ten dollars to write for Jane a brand new essay after Jane shared with the worker the essay assignment instructions.

In week four, Jane relied on her knowledge of Esperanto. She felt pressed for time and found an article by a professor from Esperanto on the week four topic. She translated Esperanto into English using Moogle Translate, and the translated text served as her week four paper.

In week five, Jane was running late again. Jane purposely uploaded a blank paper hoping that she would later claim it was an innocent mistake and not be assessed a late penalty. In a previous course on History, she had done the same (with an earlier paper from the History class rather than simply a blank) and had not seen any late penalty assessed.

In week six, Jane took work she did in a nursing course from a year ago and submitted that for her discussion posting in her current class. She simply copied and pasted the work she had labored intensively on a year ago (even though University X forbids this practice as ‘self-plagiarism’). Jane was confident her Nursing instructor never checked that work using Turnitin.com or another method.

In week seven, Jane copied and pasted work found on website.com for the paper. Jane did not use any quotation marks or other documentation to show the text was not by Jane.

Since Jane’s Ethics professor did not check papers and posting for any issues by using Turnitin.com or another method, the professor graded all of Jane’s work unaware of Jane’s actions throughout the weeks of the class. Jane feels her actions are morally justified both because her economic situation requires her to work too much to devote time to school (although other students are well-off enough to have such time) and her religion forbids cheating, but Jane ignores her religion’s teachings.

Instructions
Now that you have had an opportunity to explore ethics formally, create a reflective assessment of your learning experience and the collaborations you engaged in throughout this session. You will submit both of the following:

  • A written reflection
  • An oral presentation using a PowerPoint narrated slide show.

For the written reflection, address Jane Doe’s and respond to the following:

  • Articulate again your moral theory from week eight discussion (You can revise it if you wish). What two ethical theories best apply to it? Why those two?
  • Apply to Jane Doe’s case your personal moral philosophy as developed in week eight discussion and now. Use it to determine if what Jane Doe did was ethical or unethical per your own moral philosophy.
  • Consider if some of these examples are more grave instances of ethical transgressions than others. Explain.
  • Propose a course of social action and a solution by using the ethics of egoism, utilitarianism, the “veil of ignorance” method, deontological principles, and/or a theory of justice to deal with students like  Jane. Consider social values such as those concerning ways of life while appraising the interests of diverse populations (for instance, those of differing religions and economic status).

For the oral presentation, briefly summarize your feelings about taking a course in Ethics and explore your process of transformation in this course.

  • Discuss your experiences of the course, your beginnings, and where you are now. Consider your interaction in discussions.
  • Should health care workers be required to take a course in Ethics? Why or why not

SOCW 6311 Assignment: Planning A Needs Assessment II

SOCW 6311 wk 8 Assignment: Planning a Needs Assessment II

One of the many reasons social workers conduct needs assessment is to provide support for new programs. Social workers have many methods available to collect necessary data for a needs assessment.

Social workers can use existing data from a wide range of sources, including local and national reports by government and nonprofit agencies, as well as computerized mapping resources. Social workers can gather new data through interviews and surveys with individuals and focus groups. This data can provide the evidence that supports the need for the program.

To prepare for this Assignment, review the needs assessment plans that you and your classmates generated for this week’s Discussion. Also, review the logic models that you created in Week 7 and any literature on needs of caregivers that you used to generate them. Consider the following to stimulate your thinking:

  • Getting      information about the needs of the target population:
    • Who would       informants be?
    • What is your       purpose for interacting with them?
    • What questions       would you ask?
    • What method       would you use (interview, focus group, questionnaire)?
  • Finding      potential clients:
    • Who would       informants be?
    • What is your       purpose for interacting with them?
    • What questions       would you ask?
    • What method       would you use?
  • Interacting with      the target population:
    • Who would       informants be?
    • What is your       purpose for interacting with them?
    • What questions       would you ask?
    • What method       would you use?

Submit a 2- to 3-page paper outlining a hypothetical needs assessment related to the support group program for caregivers. Include the following:

  • The resources      needed to operate this service
  • The program      activities
  • The desired      outcomes
  • A plan for      gathering information about the population served
  • Justifications      for your plans and decisions
  • A one-paragraph      conclusion describing how you might conduct a follow-up to the needs      assessment at the implementation stage of the program evaluation

Reflection Paper

The memory paper will test your ability to think, generate hypotheses, and, in general, apply psychological science. The task will be to take a position in a current debate in memory science. You will then have to support your position by drawing on the data that are available on the topic. The goal is to convince readers that the position you take is correct by presenting the relevant data on the topic. Writing that both positions are correct will automatically result in a deduction of points. Think of this as a “debate” in which your job is to argue one of the positions. This paper will require you to go beyond the textbook. You will need to refer to journal articles, book chapters, and, if you must, websites. Each student must read journal articles for the paper. At least three journal articles must be referenced. If you use websites, you are responsible for any misinformation you get from the website (the best websites to use are those of the researchers themselves). Your view in the reaction paper must be supported by psychological science (including neuroscience, social psychology, neurobiology). Your feelings and impressions are not relevant in this paper; rather it is scientific data that you must draw upon. You do not have to be balanced. Choose arguments that support your position, and refute arguments that may support the other position. You will be graded on your ability to do both.Choose one topic from the list below. You must also answer the question in approximately 1,000 words.

You must craft your arguments to fit into the word limit. The word limit refers to the body of your paper and does not include title page, references, and any supplementary material you add.

Topics:

  • Distributed vs. Massed practice: which produces better learning.
  • Visual mnemonics: Does the method of loci improve the learning of lists?
  • Childhood amnesia: theoretical explanations
  • Survival processing: Nairne and Pandeierada (2007)
  • The generation effect
  • Flashbulb memories: special mechanism or general mechanism.
  • Critical Intrusions: What causes false memories in the DRM?
  • Diary studies: what, when, and where cues.
  • Encoding specificity
  • Interference between visual and auditory working memory
  • Part-Set Cueing: Recall of the U.S. states.
  • Retrieval practice: do you do better after self-testing
  • Overlearning: savings score and studying past the point of perfect retention
  • Own-race bias and memory for faces.
  • The accuracy of cue-only vs. cue-target judgments of learning
  • Imagery-based mnemonics vs. one the four principles.

Stewardship In Environmental Health

Research a vulnerable population (inner city, rural area, or developing nation). In a 1,250-1,500 word paper, evaluate the environmental health issues facing the chosen population, and propose strategies to promote health through environmental stewardship. Include the following:

  1. Describe the vulnerable population you chose and explain why this group faces health inequity.
  2. Describe the environmental health issue affecting this population: What caused the issue or what was the environmental exposure linked to the environmental health issue negatively influencing the public health of this population? Discuss the correlating public health issues. Identify one or more surveillance reports, provide morbidity and mortality rates, and explain the burden of disease from the environmental exposure.
  3. Evaluate current policy as it relates to the promotion of public health, health equity, and environmental stewardship. What changes need to be made, or what policies need to be implemented, to improve public health and health equity through environmental stewardship. Discuss the policymaking process, including shared decision making that must occur to create functional policy. Include the roles of ethical evidence-based decision making in this process. Consider Health in All Policies as you complete the evaluation and make recommendations.
  4. Discuss what is currently being done through local policy to address the environmental health issue, as well as the health of the community. Evaluate the effectiveness of these efforts. Consider aid given, models implemented, and private-public partnerships promoting health and environmental stewardship.
  5. Introduce a community design to further address the environmental health issue and improve public health through long-term environmental stewardship. Include renewable and sustainable resources.
  6. Identify stakeholders necessary for implementation of the proposed strategies/community design. Include community members, local and federal government, global organizations, organizations offering aid, and faith-based and other nonprofit organizations, etc.

You are required to cite five to seven sources to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and public health content.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

THESE QUESTIONS ARE TO BE ANSWERED IN APA FORMAT WITH THREE REFERENCES ATTACHED BELOW.

QUESTION 1

What is the healthy community framework according to Health in All Policies? How are evidence and ethics used in this process? Explain the application of the five key elements of this process to an environmental health issue and how collaboration with the community achieves the process.

QUESTION 2

Explain the role of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Provide examples of improvements that have been made in occupational settings as a result of OSHA. What are some of the factors that limit the effectiveness of these regulations? Are similar regulatory agencies found in other developed and developing countries?

QUESTION 3

Discuss the importance of resource conservation and renewable energy. What environmental stewardship approaches can be used at the community, national, and international level to promote environmental sustainability and alternative energy. What practices can you adopt to reduce your ecological footprint?

QUESTION 4

What spiritual or religious values and traditions underscore concern for environmental health? Discuss the role of spiritual or faith-based institutions in environmental stewardship. How have these spiritual or ministerial efforts supported local public health initiatives? What collaborative efforts have been made in environmental health, both locally and globally, with regard to spiritual or faith-based collaboration?

Chi-square tests

Due April 22 at 11:59 PM

Chi-square tests are nonparametric tests that examine nominal categories as opposed to numerical values. Consider a situation in which you may want to transform numerical scores into categories. Provide a specific example of a situation in which categories are more informative than the actual values.

Suppose we had conducted an ANOVA, with individuals grouped by political affiliation (Republican, Democrat, and Other), and we were interested in how satisfied they were with the current administration.  Satisfaction was measured on a scale of 1-10, so it was measured on a continuous scale.  Explain what changes would be required so that you could analyze the hypothesis using a chi-square test. For instance, rather than looking at test scores as a range from 0 to 100, you could change the variable to low, medium, or high. What advantages and disadvantages do you see in using this approach? Which is the better option for this hypothesis, the parametric approach or nonparametric approach? Why?”

Justify your answers with appropriate reasoning and research from your textbook and course readings. Start reviewing and responding to at least two of your classmates as early in the week as possible. You can ask technical questions or respond generally to the overall experience. Be honest, clear, and concise. Always use constructive language, even in criticism, to work toward the goal of positive progress. Using questions and seeking clarifications are good ways to make your reviews substantive!

An explanation of the use of self during your field education experience that you may have encountered or that you might encounter

According to Ganzer (2007), the use of self allows the social worker to be better able to adjust to uncertainty through empathy and experience. In doing so, social workers would be better able to understand the client and be better apt to assist them during treatment. During this field experience, this use of self would be something that I may experience. For example, while attending my supervised visitation sessions I need to utilize my use of self by being empathetic towards the clients and the situations they are going through. In doing so, I am able to provide the proper care and resources that ensure the client’s needs are being met. In addition, I utilize my sense of self by working closely with families that are struggling to meet due to COVID restrictions. In other words, I am currently working with clients on rescheduling sessions due to children, parents and myself all getting sick. Therefore, using my sense of self I am able to put myself in the clients shoes through the frustration they are feeling about not being able to meet. While my disclosure does not exceed whether or not I am sick as well there may be times in the future that disclosure may be needed in order to build a rapport with the client. However, at this time my use of self consists of being understanding of what the clients are facing since we are all still struggling with COVID restrictions. Thus, this has allowed me to build a rapport with my clients as we work hard to ensure that all needs are being met.

A description of potential boundary challenges in your field education experience

While Ganzer (2007) discusses how the use of self-disclosure can bring forth many boundary challenges the only challenge that I may experience would be that of giving clients my personal cell number. This form of self-disclosure causes boundary challenges in the sense that it gives clients easy access to me even after hours. Which in turn can lead to a faster rate of burnout as I feel obligated to respond. In addition, this is a boundary challenge as it forces me to respond to clients on days that I am not in. With that being said, I have had to tell clients my work schedule so that they do not text outside of those hours. In doing so, this decreases boundary challenges as well as the risk of burnout.

The use of self in social work practice is the combining of knowledge, values, and skills gained in social work education with aspects of one’s personal self, including personality traits, belief systems, life experiences, and cultural heritage (Dewane, 2006). It is the use of self that enables social workers to strive for authenticity and genuineness with the clients we serve, while at the same time honoring the values and ethics, we so highly value in social work practice (Walter, 2008).

When worker are being genuine and having skills to listen and interact with patients and families effectively has required me to be intuitive. During my process recording last week, I discussed my counter with a patient’s daughter who was in denial about her father being in hospice and the seriousness of their decease. Use of self requires me to have the skill and ability to provide understanding to the approach of care and support when in conversation with the daughter. In contrast, it is not my place to dishearten her but support her in her coming to terms with her father’s condition.

I have to run into a challenge in my field with the use of self, but I imagine it would be related to understanding interventions that may be necessary to know and apply to a patient and or the bereaved party. According to Ganzer (2007), while we have come a long way from the therapist’s idea as a blank screen in practice, we still rely on the therapist’s technical expertise and effective interventions. This tendency speaks to the role of self as an instrument or tool and assumes that the therapist has some degree of knowledge of what the patient may need.

Walter (2008) states that, the use of self as a therapeutic tool, allows the worker to be able to effectively establish rapport, improve outcomes of interventions and contribute something to the field of social work no one else can contribute—”your unique personality, worldview, relationship skills, and life experience.”

I embrace my unique ability to use my personality and sense of humor to set individuals at ease and to build relationships and or rapport with clients. Due to the fact that I came from a lower socioeconomic background, where I had to face many obstacles in my own life before going to college and getting my BA degree, I am able to draw from my own feelings and experiences to develop empathy and understanding for clients and the situations they find themselves in. In this context, I employ the “use of self” in my social work field placement.

Boundaries are created due to the fact that even though I come from the lower socioeconomic status as most clients, my perception and thought process has elevated through education and applying the skills learned to create tangible change. Just because I was from the hood, I am not of the hood. Setting this boundary enables clients to want to better themselves, with myself as an example.

The use of self in social work practice is the combining of knowledge, values, and skills gained in social work education with aspects of one’s personal self, including personality traits, belief systems, life experiences, and cultural heritage (Dewane, 2006). It is the use of self that enables social workers to strive for authenticity and genuineness with the clients we serve, while at the same time honoring the values and ethics we so highly value in social work practice. In an effort to explain the use of self, I use the micro skills assessment/case management as an example of how use of self looks in professional practice (Ganzer,2007). When I engage in individual or group sessions, I am exposed to the same basic skill set (e.g., paraphrasing, summarization, responding to content, feeling, and meaning) (Poorman,2003). These skills are manifested through my personality, relational skills, and developmental capacity. The goal is to master the integration of my social work skills with my authentic self.

To integrate the authentic self into the skills required for social work field placement, it is helpful to view the use of self from five different perspectives: Use of Personality, Use of Belief System, Use of Relational Dynamics, Use of Anxiety, and Use of Self Disclosure (Dewane, 2006). Through analyzing each of the constructs and their application to my daily practice, I begin to discover the unique attributes that will enable me to relate to clients in a more authentic manner and contribute to the field of social work in a way that is uniquely reflective of me.
