Socw 6051: Implications of the Social Construction of Disability

Think of the many names and labels you may have heard to describe persons with disabilities and those that are currently socially acceptable. The changing monikers given to those with disabilities are evidence of the continual negotiation of the society who labels and those who are so labeled to define what disability is and who is disabled. What do these shifting labels suggest about the social construction of disability?

Society is inconsistent in its treatment and protection of the rights of individuals with disabilities, creating a situation that contributes to marginalization that can complicate other forms of marginalization and oppression. Consider that being labeled with a disability can be simultaneously something to be fought against because of the stigma it entails and fought for because of the access that it grants to social services that meet basic medical needs, aid economic survival, and improve access to education that society can otherwise deny.

By Day 5

Post an analysis of the implications of the social construction of disability. Describe how disability can be defined as a social construct. Explain how that relates to the perception of disability. Be specific and draw on examples from the Parker case to illustrate your thoughts. Also, describe the intersection of Stephanie’s mental illness with other characteristics of her identity. Explain how those intersections could serve to further marginalize Stephanie’s place and experiences in society. Finally, explain how such marginalization impacts her ability to make choices, use self-determination, and be an active agent with equitable status in her interactions with other professionals.

Socw 6200: Myths of Sexual Violence

Myths and misinformation surround the topic of sexual violence. For years, these myths have hung around the discourse, further muddying an already difficult topic about which to communicate. Although all myths can be harmful, there are some that may be arguably more harmful. For this Discussion, you identify some of the myths surrounding the topic of sexual abuse and consider why they have remained so prevalent.

By Day 3

Post an explanation of which myths of sexual violence you think are the most harmful and why. Please use the Learning Resources to support your answer.

Socw 6200: Bystander Intervention Sexual Violence

Separating fact from fiction is imperative when learning how to recognize and respond appropriately, and effectively, to victim/survivors, and bystanders/witnesses, of sexual violence. Although a large majority of sexual assaults do not happen in public settings, in some cases, they do. This is when it is important to understand the experience of the bystander. Bystander intervention can help to explain how, when, and where these kinds of assaults take place; at times, it may even prevent the assault from happening. For this week’s Discussion, watch the video case study of Talia. Locate research on bystander intervention by Victoria L. Banyard and/or Sarah McMahon.

By Day 5

Post your application of the theory of bystander intervention to the behavior of those exhibited in the video. Then, describe a scenario in which a bystander could have influenced this scenario in a different way. Please use the Learning Resources to support your answer

Reflection Based On Provided Material

The reflection questions can be found on the last slide. Reflection question tips are on the second-to-last slide. Please click through from the beginning

  1. Choose any contemporary media text (e.g. a film or television show) that is known for its visual diversity. Using the criteria provided by Kristen Warner, discuss whether or not you consider this text an example of “plastic representation.” (If you want to discuss Black is King, here is the place to do so!) (5 points)

2.Nicole Fleetwood contends that “professional sports and their commoditization of the black athletic body […] bring us face-to-face with the psychic and physical violence of the racial state that continually attempts to dominate and manipulate black bodies” (110). Identify and describe a sequence from OJ: Made in America, Part I, that you think illustrates, expands upon, or challenges Fleetwood’s argument. (5 points)

Discussion: Mental Disorders and Criminal Behavior

Discussion: Mental Disorders and Criminal Behavior

In order to understand the interplay between mental disorder and criminal behavior, it is first important to define mental disorder. A general definition of mental disorder (also termed mental illness or mental disease) is a condition that impairs a person’s normal thoughts, emotions, and/or behaviors. The tendency to connect mental disorder and criminal behavior is not new, and the public is quick to link mental disorder to brutal and heinous crimes. This idea is not necessarily accurate, however, as there is no specific evidence that the mentally disordered are any more violent than other groups. Insight about the connection between mental disorder and criminal behavior, however, may be gleaned by examining how closely they are related and questioning whether criminal behavior may be a specific mental disorder in itself.

By Day 3

Post your answer to the question, “Is criminal behavior a mental disorder?” Justify your answer using specific examples and/or references to theories.

Assignment: Female Offenders

Assignment: Female Offenders

The 2013 FBI Uniform Crime Report, Crime in the United States, 2012 (n.d.), indicates that females accounted for about 26.2% of arrestees for 2012. The mid-year 2010 Bureau of Justice Statistics (Minton, 2011) report also indicates that 12.3% of incarcerated offenders were female. While these numbers are rather small compared to male offenders’ rates, there has been a significant increase in these percentages in recent years. Some criminologists argue that accompanying this increase is a fundamental change in the nature and the extent of female offending, while others suggest that there is no fundamental change in female offending but, rather, a shift in society’s perception of particular crimes associated with female offenders. Vigorous prosecution of petty crimes, for example, may be at the root of the increase in numbers of female offenders in recent years. This leaves open the possibility that female offenders have, like males, been engaging in criminal behavior, but only recently held accountable at a comparable rate.

Although there is much debate on both sides of the argument about whether there is a significant difference in male and female criminal behavior, how society views gender roles certainly affects how female offenders are perceived. While there appears to be no definitive answer as to whether male and female offenders are significantly different, the question is far from moot, as the potential difference affects how crime prevention and treatment programs are crafted and whether differences that influence criminal behavior may be addressed.

For this Assignment review the article, “Understanding the Female Offender,” and consider the primary causes of female offending. Then, review the online summary, “Women and Girls in the Criminal Justice System,” focusing on the risk factors associated with criminal behavior of female offenders. Also consider how crime prevention and treatment may differ for male and female offenders.

Assignment (1–2 pages):

  • Briefly describe characteristics associated with female and male offenders.
  • Compare (similarities and differences) of female and male offenders.
  • Based upon your comparison, draw at least one conclusion about the psychology, characteristics, and behaviors of female and male offenders.

Support your Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are asked to provide a reference list only for those resources not included in the resources for this course.

By Day 7

Discussion 2: Trauma and Comorbidity

Discussion 2: Trauma and Comorbidity

It is not uncommon for people who experience trauma to use substances to moderate psychological or emotional pain. Trauma can easily add to the strain that people already feel. In this Discussion, you diagnose and plan treatment for a case provided by your instructor.

To prepare: Review the Learning Resources on trauma treatment, including additional resources from the optional resources/media or from the Suggested Further Reading document. Then read the case provided by your instructor for this week’s Discussion.

By Day 5

Post a 3- to 5-minute recorded video response in which you address the following:

  • Provide the full DSM-5 diagnosis for the client. Remember, a full diagnosis should include the name of the disorder, ICD-10-CM code, specifiers, severity, and the Z codes (other conditions that may be a focus of clinical attention). Keep in mind a diagnosis covers the most recent 12 months.
  • Explain the diagnosis by matching the symptoms identified in the case to the specific criteria for the diagnosis.
  • Identify the first area of focus you would address as client’s social worker, and explain your specific treatment recommendations. Support your recommendations with research.
  • Explain how you would manage client’s diverse needs, including his co-occurring disorders.
  • Describe a treatment plan for client, including how you would evaluation his treatment.

Support your post with specific references to the resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.

Include a transcript and/or edit closed captioning on your video to ensure your presentation is accessible to colleagues of differing abilities. See the document: How to Upload a Video and a Transcript (PDF) in the Week 1 Resources.

Journal Entry 2

Before completing this Journal reflection, be sure you have watched the NPR podcast interview with Dr. Chenjerai Kumanyika that is posted in this module. Then, reflect on the following questions in your journal entry, writing at least one full paragraph for each question.

  1. The interview with Dr. Chenjerai Kumanyika provides context for policing in the United States. After reviewing the tools in the Cognitive Toolkit, identify a tool that seems like it could be helpful to you in making sense of these events and this context. Define the tool in your own words and discuss its relevance to understanding the material covered in the podcast.
  2. The narratives about the situation, including media narratives, casual conversations, and your own understanding of events, might be different. Engage in the self-awareness tool, identify your perspective on the issue and the reasons for your perspective. Try to pick apart and explain why this is your position.

Podcast:

NPR Podcast on the History of Policing in the US

(Links to an external site.)

Listen to this brief interview with Professor Chenjerai Kumanyika of Rutgers University about the history of policing in the United States. Reflect on Dr. Kumanyika’s contextualization of the current resistance and uprisings about police violence vis-a-vis a history of policing and its role in this country. Think about the historical relationships and events discussed here, and how they connect with current policy decisions.

A Disease Of Obsession

Submit a 2- page paperthat addresses the following:

  • Provide two examples of how symptoms of a co-occurring disorder may influence efforts to stop the abuse of a substance.
  • Describe the symptoms and how substance abuse or an addictive behavior might temporarily counteract the symptoms of the co-occurring disorder.
  • Explain how the development of a ritual around substance abuse or addictive behavior can be used to strengthen an addiction or be used to treat an addiction.
  • Explain why the type of substance or other obsession is relevant when it comes to the disease of addiction itself.
  • Describe three examples of how an individual’s addiction might impact others or society.

SOCW 6070 Discussion 1: Funding Through Grants

SOCW 6070 WK 9 Discussion 1: Funding through Grants

Budgeting in human services organizations brings about many challenges. Human services agencies must be creative in managing their budget due to the increased demands on the agency and the needs of the clients and stakeholders. There are many legal, contractual, and other requirements under the concept of financial management, as such agency administrators need to be creative to obtain funding. Applying for grants in both the private and public sectors is one access to funding resources. Most grants will require that you present a proposed budget for use of the funds. Thus, grants and budgeting often go hand in hand.

For this Discussion, think about grant writing and the elements needed to write a successful grant. Then, review sample grants at https://grantspace.org/resources/sample-documents/. Identify one grant to discuss.

Post the following: 300 to 400 words not including the questions the questions are to be in bold then the answer:

Describe the key elements to grant writing.

Provide a brief description of the grant proposal you selected and explain the strengths of the proposal and any areas where it could be improved.

Explain how you would improve on the grant proposal to convince the funder that funding this program would have a positive and measurable effect on the community.

Support your post with specific references to the resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.
