Reflection Paper- Being Different

Reflection Paper – Being Different

Go to a place where you are different from the majority of people present (e.g., a rich poor, Asian-American, Hispanic, Caucasian, African American, etc., neighborhood; a mental health facility; a welfare office; a senior citizen’s center; a LGBT agency, etc.).  Spend several hours in this place, observing those around you.  Pay attention to what you see, hear, smell, etc., and to your feelings about being in this environment. The visit to the location must take place no earlier than a month before the assignment is due.

  • The first paragraph should be a brief description of the place you visited.  Include a term identifying the majority population where you were (e.g., poor, Asian-American, etc.).  The rest of the paper should be a coherent essay in which you discuss how it felt to be different, as well as what the experience taught or reminded you about being different in this society.  Your essay should conclude with a discussion of the implications all this has for working and living in a diverse society.

The Road To Character

Read chapter 8 of The road to character by David Brooks and address these:

Part 1: List of character and life shaping events and/or experiences. List no more than 6 character shaping events/experiences.

The following steps may be helpful to create the list.

Step 1:  Read the Chapter or watch the film (In this case read Chapter  8) and take notes on all of the events and experiences that have impacted the life of the individual or situation presented (in these case the life of St. Augustine).   It is better to take more notes than may be needed.

Step 2: Review your notes. Then select and make a list of those events and experiences that you feel are the most important in shaping the individual(s) life and character development. Take some time to reflect on this list to get a better feeling of these events and experiences.

Step 3: As you reflect on your list, try and identify what Brooks terms “Agency”- “…there is something significant that gives shape to life.” (p. 84). There are usually key moments or events etc. that help to shape one’s character and, on a wider scope, one’s life. This “Agency” may take the shape of a series of experiences etc. or it may be one significant moment that helps transform one’s life. An “epiphany” experience that helps to change one’s path in life.

Part 2: Bronfenbrenner and Brooks

List and briefly describe Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems and no more than 5 important ideas from Brooks that help describe and understand the shaping of one’s character. The Introduction Chapter 1 and 10 contain most of Brooks’ ideas. However, they’re some additional ideas in the case histories of the individuals presented in Chapters 2-9.

The following steps may be helpful.

Step 1: List and briefly describe each of the five Ecological Systems.

Step 2: List and briefly describe ideas/concepts about character development (e.g., U-Curve, Humility Gab, Agency events/experiences, the Big Me, Culture of Authenticity, Humility Code, etc. Note: Most of these ideas/concepts can be found in the Introduction, Chapter 1 and Chapter 10. List no more than five ideas/concepts from Road to Character.

Part 3: Applying Bronfenbrenner and Brooks’ ideas (Part 2) to the list created in Part 1.

Step 1: Match each event/experience in the list created in Part 1 to Bronfenbrenner and Brooks’ ideas. Some of the events/experiences may overlap with an Ecological System and a concept from Brooks. For example, an event that takes place in the Microsystem may also be explained by the U-Curve.

Step 2: Simply List the concept or idea (e.g., Microsystem, Agency Event etc. and under the concept describe the event/experience).

Part 4: Conclusions  (Closing Paragraph)

The conclusion (closing paragraph) is a summary of your thoughts on the events/experiences that shaped who the person became. In some ways the Chronosystem is an appropriate way to view the conclusion.

The following steps may be helpful to formulate your Conclusion

Step 1: Review Parts 1-3 of the essay. Takes some time to stop and reflect on anything that moves you or provides some insight into the individual’s life. Simply write down what comes to mind.

Step 2: Sum up what you learned from the assignment. Some thoughts: Try and visualize the individual’s life over time, from early years to maturity. What life lessons came to mind from reading about the person? Did you learn anything new about character formation or reinforce your views on how moral integrity is created? How can the character traits that the person demonstrated be applied for Human Service Workers?

PSY 5130-4

Chapter 11 of the course textbook covers cultural, cognitive, personality, and identity issues of the developmental stage of emerging adulthood, as does this week’s required article by Smith-Osborne (2007), which presents a historical perspective on two developmental theories, with a focus on resiliency theory.

In your initial post to this discussion, address each of the following items:

  • Identify and cite two peer-reviewed articles that analyze similar issues or cases relating to emerging adulthood from the perspectives of lifespan theory and resiliency theory, respectively.
  • Briefly summarize the theses, methods, and results of each study, identifying the similarities and difference between the two approaches.
  • Assess the relative strength and shortcomings of the resiliency theory approach vis a vis a lifespan theory approach with reference to specific cases or examples.
  • Reflect on what the two studies reveal about the cognitive and personality issues of emerging adulthood discussed in your articles.

In your responses to no fewer than two of your classmates, compare and contrast your respective choices of literature, issues/cases, and theoretical approaches. Offer constructive criticism and argument regarding your respective conclusions. Additionally, identify any insights you have gained as a result of reading the responses of others.

Hunger meets Born Round

Hunger meets Born Round

As we discuss narratives this week, we will talk about narrative tension and how a writer “compels” you forward through the use of tension and the narrative story arc: beginning, middle, and end. We will also think about the power of telling your story and WHY would someone reveal themselves to vulnerably to an audience? Both of these writers get very personal about their relationship to food and their body images. What moved you or interested you or surprised you? Where are you seeing them use SCENE, SUMMARY and MUSING? What is the author’s point–thesis–what do they want you to agree with by reading their stories or what is the bigger message? And, as a writer learning from other writers, what did either of these pieces do well that you might want to do as well?

On Dumpster Diving meets Aphrodite

On Dumpster Diving meets Aphrodite

As we discuss narratives this week, let’s talk about description, particularly sensory description (smells, sounds, sights, tastes and touch) and using specific details (instead of generic details) to make things come to life. So begin with your first reaction to these pieces. What moved you or interested you or surprised you? As a writer learning from other writers, what did either of these pieces do well that you might want to do as well?

Then, in addition to talking about these pieces as ways to use the personal to make a point, I want you to consider HOW they are engaging the senses and “putting you into the scenes” with the specific use of details to further their personal narratives. Did this work (or not) for you and why?

Responses to at least 2 posts (in this thread) must be up by Friday at midnight.

Remember: An original post should be roughly 200 words.

Statistics For Behavioral Science

The majority of the data is normally distributed if there are enough subjects. For instance, if you collected test scores of only a few honor students, the data will most likely not be normally distributed because you would have a sample that did not represent the entire population. But the identical test scores (for honor students) collected from all schools in a state will result in a normal distribution.

Identify an example of a population that you would expect to be normally distributed. Explain why you believe it would be normally distributed. Then, describe a subset of the population you identified and explain why it would not be normally distributed and what the distribution would look like.

Justify your answers with appropriate reasoning and research from your textbook and course readings. Start reviewing and responding to at least two of your classmates as early in the week as possible. You can ask technical questions or respond generally to the overall experience. Be honest, clear, and concise. Always use constructive language, even in criticism, to work toward the goal of positive progress. Using questions and seeking clarifications are good ways to make your reviews substantive!

Submission Details:

  • Post your response to the Discussion Areaby the due date assigned. Respond to at least two posts by the end of the week.

Mental Health Brochure

THERE ARE TWO PARTS TO THIS ASSIGNMENT

Imagine you are creating an agency to provide mental health services for individuals suffering from mood disorders. In order to get the word out about your new agency, create a brochure that identifies two specific mood disorders your agency will provide services for in your community.

Include the following in your brochure:

  1. A description of your target audience.
  2. A brief description of the methods used to address each mood disorder
  3. A list of potential treatment goals for each mood disorder.

Use a brochure format of your choice that is appealing to your target audience. (graphics and color are encouraged).  You do not need to submit the brochure to LopesWrite.
