Psychology Of Disaster Course Project

Psychology of Disaster Course Project

Many topics of interest and importance are covered during the course; Week 7, especially, provides an opportunity to explore several, often overlooked topics that are critical to our understanding in the discussion of the psychology of disaster. For your course project, you are tasked with selecting one of the following areas, presented during week seven of the course, and examining a disaster event, using the selected area as the foundation of your work. The areas from which you may select include:

  • Secondary Traumatic Stress (Effects of disasters on first responders/BH providers)
  • Environmental Vulnerabilities and Considerations
  • Critical Infrastructure Failures
  • Disaster in School Environments
  • In a 10 to 15 slide PowerPoint presentation, identify a recent disaster event (within the most recent 10 years), providing a description of the major events of the disaster leading up to, during, and after the event, to the extent possible.
    • Incorporating the selected area above, discuss, with detail and support, how the area is illustrated in the disaster event.
  • Explore how the selected element influenced disaster response efforts.
    • Provide details of the ways in which these influences were observed.
    • Discuss any barriers presented by the selected element in providing effectual behavioral health interventions.
  • Prepare a plan describing how the challenges experienced might be more effectively navigated using the principles of disaster behavioral health learned throughout the course.
    • Share the steps and resources you would deploy to overcome or avoid the challenges faced in the selected element.

In developing your work, be sure to rely upon academic, scholarly sources to support the definitions and recommendations provided. Ensure the plan presented is based upon evidenced based practices established in the field as effective in addressing psychological needs in disaster settings.

Work should be submitted in a PowerPoint file or other compatible file, and be 10 to 15 slides in length, excluding the required title slide and separate reference slide. Detailed speaker notes should accompany slides containing mostly bullet point data to include the details expected in the instructions above.

What Are Multiple Role Relationships?

Describe two examples of multiple role relationships.

Why are multiple role relationships potentially problematic? How can multiple role relationships be either avoided or handled professionally?

Can you think of an instance in which multiple role relationships might be permissible?

To complete this assignment, review the Discussion Rubric PDF document attached assignment must be 2-3 paragraphs. APA format.

Variables

Outline a research question and hypothesis that interests you, and describe the key variables. This could be the research question you plan to use for your final project, but it does not have to be.

What are the key variables?

How could these variables be operationalized?

Are there any ethical issues that arise when studying this topic?

Also, be sure to label the independent and dependent variables. When responding to your classmates, suggest other ways that the variables in their research question could be operationally defined.

To complete this assignment, review the Discussion Rubric PDF document. Discussion must be 2-3 paragraphs. APA format please follow rubric.

Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum, read Chapter 5 of your course text and visit the PubMed Central (Links to an external site.) web page. You may also consider reviewing the PubMed Central Quick Start Guide (Links to an external site.) and PubMed Tutorials (Links to an external site.) to help you navigate the resource more effectively.

This week we will look at how we have gotten to know what we do about the brain. Chapter 5 in your textbook discusses a number of research techniques used to study the brain. For this week’s discussion, choose one of these techniques and visit the PubMed Central (Links to an external site.) web page to find an original research article where this technique was used.

In your initial post,

  • Describe the technique you selected and why you find it especially compelling as a research method.
  • Explain to your peers how the study from the article you choose from the PubMed Central (Links to an external site.) web page illustrates the value of the method you have chosen.

Literature Review

I am writing a Literature Review for a Psychology class. I have already identified a research question. The research question is ‘how does trauma affect children in foster care?’ I will provide the links to the articles that I hope to be useful to the assignment, the scoring guide, and the assignment template.

Analysis of Sources

Begin by documenting the most important elements of your selected sources. Answer the following questions for at least three of the best articles you have selected:

  • Main idea: What is the purpose or thesis statement of the article? (This may be located in the introduction or conclusion of the paper.) How is it relevant to your research question?
  • Major points: What conclusions about the main idea did the author come to in the article? Do the major points support the main idea?
  • Supporting evidence: What arguments, citations, examples, data, and other evidence support the author’s conclusions? Is the evidence convincing?
  • Patterns or themes: Are there any ideas or recurring information that the author keeps coming back to throughout the article?
  • Application: How do the techniques, strategies, best practices, and other findings in the article apply to practice in psychology and in your specialization?
  • Connection to research question: How does this information directly link or apply to your research question? If you have trouble coming up with a connection, do not use it in your assignment.

Instructions

Complete the following in your assignment template:

Introduction

State your research question and explain how it relates to your specialization and professional interests.

Synthesis of Literature Into a Cohesive Review

In the preparation study in Week 5, you identified at least three key themes, or focuses of inquiry, that are relevant to your research question and present in each article. These themes may be based on:

  • Related aspects of research questions.
  • Related or differing conclusions.
  • Other factors or ideas the studies have in common.
  • Other points of contrast between the studies.

Use concise formulations of these themes as headings for the next sections of the paper. In these sections, compare and contrast your resources’ positions relative to each theme, and then synthesize your own position relative to the theme. Support your conclusions by citing your references.  The themes you identify should be based on content, not research methods or how the study was conducted.

Granello’s 2001 article, “Promoting Cognitive Complexity in Graduate Written Work: Using Bloom’s Taxonomy as a Pedagogical Tool to Improve Literature Reviews,” provides a framework and strategies to help you work through this part of your assignment.

Conclusion

Restate the conclusions you came to regarding the themes you explored with your research. Support your conclusions by citing your references. However, if you find that more research would be needed to decide a question, briefly outline ideas of how you could undertake that research.

Additional Requirements

  • Written communication: Should be free of errors that detract from the overall message.
  • APA formatting: References and citations should be formatted according to the current APA style and format. Include a title page, abstract, and reference list.
  • Resources: Minimum of three scholarly resources. All references need to be cited in-text, according to current APA standards. Remember that citations are to support your thoughts, not take the place of them!
  • Length: 4–5 double-spaced pages, not including the title page or reference page.
  • Font and font-size: Times New Roman, 12-point.
